While playing in a charity fundraiser in Tuscaloosa as a sophomore in college, won $1 million in a 1992 Hole-in-One Shootout while attending the University of Alabama and chose to give up his amateur status. Received his final $50,000 payment on October 1, 2012.

At The Honda Classic in 2016, immediately after completing his second round, sought the assistance of an on-site medic, due to chest pains and shortness of breath. Was taken to nearby Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, where doctors determined he had suffered a heart attack. With over 90 percent of an artery blocked, a stent was placed in the artery. After a weekend in hospital and an additional five weeks of recovery, returned to the PGA TOUR at RBC Heritage, making the cut.
